Meet Lucy at the National Museum of Ethiopia

Meet the oldest hominid ever discovered at the National Museum of Ethiopia - Lucy.

by Darley Newman

We just arrived in Ethiopia, where we're filming for a few days and had the chance to go and meet Lucy at the National Museum of Ethiopia. While there are lots of antiquarian relics and archaeological artifacts showcasing the history of Ethiopia, Lucy is the museum's most famous. She's housed downstairs in her own room.

My video encounter with Lucy.

Lucy was discovered in 1974. What I saw in the museum is merely a cast of Lucy, as the real skeleton is so fragile that it's actually housed in a specially constructed safe in the Paleoanthropology Laboratories of the National Museum of Ethiopia in Addis Ababa. Still, it was neat to get up close and see how slight, three-year-old Lucy was when she perished.

If you do visit the Ethiopian National Museum in Addis, I recommend lunch in the adjoining restaurant, the Lucy Cafe, where there's a lovely garden. Yes, I did eat pizza, but I'm having a big traditional feast tonight with dancing. More later from my adventures in Ethiopia, Africa.
