Since 1998 Mkulu Kei Horse Trails and Riding Holidays has welcomed children and teens ages 8 -16 for working equine holidays on the Eastern Cape of the Sunshine Coast, the "Adventure Province in South Africa." Based at Cher-a-Don, a family run equine and adventure center and the home base to Mkulu Kei Horse Trails, this horse camp offers an outdoor, hands-on equestrian experience. Kids learn how to ride and get comfortable on and around a ponies and horses.
Kids are brought through different riding paces, learning how to trot and canter on patient horses. As the children become more competent with their riding skills, they may participate in riding games and jumping, On the ground, kids are taught how to care for a horse and pony, basic stable management, grooming, feeding, tacking up and basic medical treatments. The children will also get the chance to trail ride, including riding on the beach, a chance to play in the waves with a horse.
The equestrian curriculum is based on British Pony Club safety rules, theory lessons and tests. Kids may ride a variety of horse breeds, including Friesians, Boerperd, Nooitgedachts, part breeds and Arabs to compliment their preferences and riding ability. The size of Mkulu Horse Trails' horses and ponies vary from 12 to 17 hands, and they are fit and in good condition.
Kids stay in the family home in bunk beds with comfortable high-density mattresses. Mkulu Kei Horse Trails has a large outside area with open pit fireplace, pizza oven, and social area. This area is used for dining, lessons and socializing, music, horse videos and telling really good ghost stories and eating roasted marshmallows.
Large groups (over 8 kids) are accommodated at Cher-a-Don Teambuilding Adventure Centre previously known as Lalapanzi Adventure Centre, where there are two dormitories and other great facilities.
Meals are good healthy home cooking and dietary restrictions can be accommodated with prior notice.
Horse Camp Activities
Equine-assisted learning, riding lessons, mounted games, beginning and more advanced jumping, how to care for horses, basic stable management and how to communicate with a horse. Riding lessons take place in an arena or school, but kids also get the experience of trail riding, including the dream adventure of riding horses on the beach, in the sea, waves and lagoon.
Other Camp Activities
Horseback riding on the beach, game and birdlife viewing, swimming, adventure camp, obstacle courses, canoeing, abseiling and other fun activities.
